Kechari Question – Is There A Bone Protrusion Just Under The Pituitary Gland?

Originally asked on AYPsite by Thokar in 2007.

Kechari Question…

ok i recently read this excerpt from one of norman paulsen’s books and i have a question about something described with kechari… first here is the quote…

‘What is Kechari Mudra, Boone?’
Well, it has to do with the tongue and a unique position which the tongue assumes."

Boone began to explain how the life force is drawn up through the nerve centers of the spine toward the higher centers of the brain. He then went on to describe the pituitary gland and the pineal gland and their functions. Finally he opened his mouth and said,

‘Do you see the soft palate which hangs down from the roof of the mouth?’
‘Yes, I see it.’
‘Well, the trick is to pass the tongue backwards until it slips behind the soft palate. You then push the tongue upward until it slips behind the nasopharynx. You should be able to close off either nostril with the tongue from the inside. Pushing on up with the tip of the tongue, you will reach a bone protrusion that is just under the pituitary gland, The force which is rising upwards flows off the end of the tongue, like flames under a pot. It is here that the final connection is made. By exciting the pituitary gland, the pineal gland begins to vibrate, and the two forces are magnetically drawn to unite in the region of the spiritual eye. Therefore Kechari Mudra works like an excitation current to arouse other forces in the body to join at the center of consciousness.’

I decided to try it. I pushed my tongue upwards and backwards until I felt the tip of my tongue touching the soft palate. Pushing on, my tongue slipped behind the soft palate. Then moving the tongue upward, I could feel the nasopharynx and the inner side of the nostrils with the tip of my tongue. I pushed beyond the nostrils and came up to the bone protrusion Daniel had described. It was true! I immediately felt a very deep consciousness pervading my mind; with closed eyes spectral lights flared around me. Daniel found it hard to believe I had accomplished this very difficult mundra on my first try, so I demonstrated the fact. I began to practice Kriya Yoga with my tongue in this unique position experiencing tremendous results."

Ok my question now is this… I’ve been able to be in kechari stage 2 for quite a while… but ive never felt any bone protrustion… as I trace the tongue up the septum the septum seems to curve back a bit but my tongue wont reach any further than this…prob 1.5-2inches length of septum total(this is a guesstimate) but what is this supposed bone protrusion? Ive never heard of it before… but from the way its described in this passage it would seem to be important…

Thanks in advance for any help…

This is a great question – understanding the anatomy of the kechari mudra can be confusing and counterintuitive. I have read a few people talk about activating the pituitary, and there does seem to be some confusion around this – in particular – regarding how close the tongue can get to the pituitary gland.

I think the best place to start here is by looking at a picture from Wikipedia of the pituitary anatomy, as below (Hypophyse = Pituatary Gland). We immediately notice that the pituitary sits in a nice little cave, kind of below the rest of the brain. It appears to be a prime candidate for the tongue, arising upwards, to activate this gland!

However, the sphenoid sinus is in the way! In the picture below, the red area is the pituitary, and the rather large yellow area is the sphenoid sinus. There are thus two layers of bone in the way between the tongue and the pituitary.

So if we are looking for a "bone protrusion that is just under the pituitary gland" – I do not believe there is such a protrusion that the tongue can reach.

Even in stage 4 – we can still see in the previous anatomical images – the tongue is always separated from the pituitary by the sphenoid sinus.

But sill, maybe there is a bony protrusion just under the sphenoid sinus? At the ceiling of stage 3, the area is actually pretty smooth. But if your tongue applies some pressure, especially when nodding your head in Jalandhara, one can feel some bump over here. In the second picture above, you can even see a shallow protrusion just below the yellow area. Reading the original account careful, it says that the tongue activates the pituitary, which causes the pineal to vibrate. This is broadly aligned with my own experiences (pointing the tongue up and slightly backwards activates the bindu) – yet for me – this was certainly not the final connection.

This account is 100% accurate in its claim that the kechari mudra draws fiery energy upwards, and that it creates a connection that opens the third eye – but the process is not quite as simple as placing your tongue at a certain spot, and then fireworks continually occurring. For instance, in my practice, the intuition to move into stage 4 arose after exploring the ceiling of stage 3 – which yielded a different variety of explosive experiences. However, if we assume that some people have been monks in previous lives, perhaps they are more primed for effortless results! Some people apparently have full blown kechari results even in stage 1 of kechari.

I would read this account in a larger context that includes other people's experiences. Some people strive for activation at the 'secret spot' located on the septum. Even ignoring stage 4 for now, there are at least three more sensitive spots that are of note nearby the septum. The truth is that the nasopharynx contains a dynamic system of nadis – and it is better to explore this cave thoroughly – than to over-focus on a particular secret spot. That is my take!
